Terms of Service

Effective 27 October 2026. The agreement between you and GuruShishya when you use the app: your account, what you may do, your recordings, plans and billing.

These terms

GuruShishya is operated by KA Academy of Indian Music & Dance, Inc. (“GuruShishya”, “we”, “us”). By using GuruShishya you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If a student is under 18, a parent or guardian agrees to them on the student's behalf, and the student's school may also agree to them for its students.

Accounts

  • You sign in with Google or with an email and password. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what is done with your account.
  • A child under 13 uses an account set up through their school or by a parent.
  • Each account belongs to one person. Give accurate details, and tell your school or us if something about your account is wrong.
  • Your school controls its roster: it can add you, move you between groups, change your role, or remove you from the school.

Acceptable use

Use GuruShishya to learn, teach and practice music. Do not:

  • upload anything you have no right to share, or anything unlawful, hateful, or harmful to children;
  • harass other students, gurus or families, or misuse remarks or messages;
  • try to get into accounts, recordings or schools that are not yours, or get around a plan's limits;
  • copy, scrape or resell the app or its content, or disrupt or overload the service.

We may remove content, or suspend an account, that breaks these rules.

Your recordings and your school's content

Your recordings are yours. You keep every right you have in the takes you record. You give us permission to store, process, score and show them only so far as running GuruShishya needs — to you, your guru and your school — and for no other purpose. That permission ends when the recording is deleted.

Your school's content is your school's. Reference tracks, lessons, quizzes and remarks a guru or school publishes belong to that school or guru. You may use them for your own practice while you are part of the school; you may not copy or share them outside the app.

The app itself, its design, and material we provide, such as the raga knowledge base, are ours or our licensors'. You may use them for your own learning while you use GuruShishya.

Plans

  • Starter is free. It begins with a 30-day pass to everything, with no card needed. When the pass ends, listening, the verses and the raga book stay open; recording pauses and the studio (Swaralipi, for notation, and Rachanā, for composing) closes until you choose a paid plan.
  • Sadhaka — $9.99 a month or $79 a year — unlimited takes and your guru's evaluation, the practice room, badges and leaderboards.
  • Vidwan — $19.99 a month or $159 a year — everything in Sadhaka, plus the studio: Swaralipi and Rachanā.
  • Your school may grant you a plan. A granted plan costs you nothing and lasts as long as your school keeps it in place.

Prices are in US dollars. We may change what a plan includes or costs; a price change applies from your next renewal, and we will tell you before it does.

Billing, renewal and cancellation

  • Payments are taken by Stripe. We never see your card number.
  • Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each month or year, and the card on file is charged at the price then in effect, until you cancel.
  • Cancel any time from the Plan page: Manage billing opens the Stripe customer portal, where you can cancel or change your card. After canceling, you keep your plan until the end of the period you have paid for; it then does not renew and your account returns to Starter.
  • Refunds. We do not give partial refunds for unused time in a month or a year. For a charge you do not recognize, or one you believe is a mistake, email hello@gurushishyas.com with the date and amount.
  • If a renewal payment fails and cannot be collected, the plan ends and your account returns to Starter.

Ending your use

You may stop using GuruShishya at any time, and ask us to delete your account by emailing hello@gurushishyas.com. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and we may stop offering the service, telling you in advance where we reasonably can. A paid plan we close without fault on your part is refunded for the unused part of its period.

Disclaimers

GuruShishya helps you practice; it does not replace your guru. Scores from our audio scorer are a guide to a take, not a judgment of your music, and may sometimes be wrong. We work to keep the app running and your recordings safe, but we provide the service “as is” and cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, GuruShishya is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost time or lost data, arising from your use of the service. For a paid plan, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to $50. For a free account, we have no liability to you. Nothing in these terms limits a liability the law does not allow to be limited.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco, California, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it there.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we will post the new version here with a new effective date, and for a change that matters we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Using GuruShishya after that means you accept the new terms.
